Morning Clouds (21,210 bytes) TODAY'S SCRIPTURE VERSE:

But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; 21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.    Matthew 13:20,21

STONY GROUND HEARERS

"He that receiveth seed into stony places", indicates the reception of the word, even with joy at the time of sowing. This parable reveals that it takes more than just receiving the word, by showing us that in each hearer there was reception to varying degrees. To be a good ground hearer there must be a preparation of the heart to remove the hindrances to the germination and rooting processes of the seed of the gospel.

The stony ground refered to here is a thin layer of soil upon a stone, in which when seed is planted it will germinate quickly, but because of the shallowness of the soil and the rock beneath there can be no depth of root. It is well for a plant that has shallow roots so long as there is regular rain and mild conditions, but when droughts come and high temperatures prevail, the plant will wither and die. Just like the stony ground we may appear well on the surface, while beneath lies a heart so hardened the word can find no place to root and by and by we will pine away spiritually.

If we will be honest with God he will help us to purify our hearts of hindrances that we may receive his word into good ground, that will promote the germination and rooting of the word of God, then will the full potential of the mustard seed of the gospel be realized!
