Salt is a most peculiar
substance. When added to food in the right proportion it
enhances the flavor thereby making it more appetizing.
Jesus here declares "ye are the salt of the earth:", or that
which is to season or make more acceptable. The church is
to have an effect upon the earth, and it is this effect
that Christ is speaking of. One of the the church's greatest
means of effecting this world is thruogh prayer. The word of
God firmly establishes this in several passages. James 5:16b
reads "the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man
availeth much". Psalms 2:8 declares "ask of me, and i shall
give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost
parts of the earth for thy possession". Matthew 7:7 adds
"ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find;
knock, and it shall be opened unto you:".
But if the salt has lost his savour,
wherewith shall it be salted? The apostle Paul declared
in 2 Cor. 2:16 "to the one we are the savour of death unto
death; and to the other the savour of life unto life.
and who is sufficient for these things"? Salt will preserve
if it has not lost it's savour, and salt will also burn
in a wounded world of sin. Lord help us not to be worthless,
but that Christ our (savour) abide richly in us!
